The Top 10 Pinoy Romantic Comedies That You Must Watch

Filipinos love romantic comedies, that is why the movie industry in the Philippines is loaded with these types of films since this genre is always well received. These romantic comedies are filled with overused storylines, cheesy dialogues and two-dimensional, quirky characters, but they still serve as the guilty pleasure of the masses. There are rare romantic comedy gems in the movie industry in the country that can turn the clichés and show high quality and must watch romantic comedy movies that people can repeatedly watch and quote the lines by heart, even after years that it was shown in theaters.

If a movie was created in the minds of a master director and screenwriter, even the most simple story about love and life can become an epic tale mixed with Filipino humor and an incredible chemistry between the lead characters.

1.) Got to Believe (2002)

The Filipino’s answer to “The Wedding Planner”, this 2002 romantic comedy movie Got to Believe is centered around Toni (Claudine Barreto), a wedding planner and often the bridesmaid on her friend’s weddings. At 25, her family and friends already consider her a spinster, much to her frustration. To make matters worse, Lorenz (Rico Yan) who is a wedding photographer, always captures her embarrassing moments on film. Toni is the woman who has faith in true love but does not have much luck in finding it, while Lorenz does not believe in the concept of love but is asked to write an article about Toni.

2.) My Amnesia Girl (2010)

Apollo (John Lloyd Cruz) escapes his own reception and runs into Irene (Toni Gonzaga), his ex-girlfriend who does not recognize him. Apollo tries to woe Irene who he assumes has amnesia, but things did not go as planned and Irene cuts him off. He still pursed her, and Irene eventually opened up to him about her life. When the connection is back and there is a new spark that started, they realized that it is not as easy as they thought it would be.

3.) Till There Was You (2003)

Aspiring actress Joana (Judy Ann Santos) sat beside to a single father named Albert (Piolo Pascual) on a bus, he was carrying his daughter Pippa. She then leaves her picture and her book behind on the bus accidentally. Albert then took it and while his daughter was growing up, he made her believe that the woman in the photo and the owner of the book was her mother. Joanna then appears on an advertisement, Pippa assumed that she found her mother. Wanting to resolve the matter that he created, Albert hires Joanna to be his daughter’s mother even if it was just pretend.

4.) That Thing Called Tadhana (2014)

Mace (Angelika Panganiban) cries in an airport in Italy as she desperately attempts and tries to lighten her excess baggage. Anthony (JM De Guzman) a fellow Filipino, offered to help her by letting her put a few of her things in his own luggage. They sat next to each other on the plane on a flight home from Italy and they decided to go on a road trip that Anthony thought could help Mace get over her heartbreak since she just broke up with her boyfriend. They went on the road to recovery and they visited beautiful places in Baguio City and in Sagada, Mountain Province.

5.) Starting Over Again (2014)

Ginny (Toni Gonzaga) is in love with Marco (Piolo Pascual) who is her professor in History. She tries to woo him and follows him around while giving gifts and letters. Just when she was about to give up, Marco confessed that he felt the same. After four long years of being in a relationship, they started having fights as Ginny wanted to make her dreams come true and she wants to travel and live her life while Marco is already happy with his own life and is already contented with what he has. Ginny left Marco and went to Barcelona, Marco then promised her that he will wait for her to return. After four years, Ginny and Marco met again, but he is already in a relationship with someone new. Ginny then hopes to make things go back to the way that they were.

6.) Forevermore (2002)

Young engineer Anton (Jericho Rosales) returned to the mango farm in the province that is owned by his family after he learned about the heart condition of his grandfather. Marian (Kristine Hermosa) is a girl that is living in the farm and is excited to see Anton who she harbored feeling for in a long time. She believes that he can fulfill her fantasies about then getting together and living in the farm together as a couple.

7.) Labs Kita, Okay Ka Lang? (1998)

Ned (Marvin Agustin) and Bujoy (Jolina Magdangal) are childhood friends and they have been friends for a long time. They are very close, and they often fight, but Bujoy realizes that she started to develop feelings for Ned. Ned, on the other hand, has feelings for a woman named Mary Anne, and he labels her as the girl of his dreams. Bujoy tries to accept the fact that her love is unrequited, but she still finds it difficult to see her childhood friend in love with someone else.

Julian (Derek Ramsey) is a Filipino American who traveled to the Philippines to learn Filipino in order to get revenged on his ex-girlfriend. He hires Tere (Jennylyn Mercado) as his Filipino tutor, she then helped Julian read and memorize Filipino translation of his angry messages to his ex-girlfriend. After learning Julian’s motives of learning Filipino, Tere wanted to back out of their deal but the salary was too good for her to say no. Soon, they learned about the language and about each other.

Laida Magtalas (Sarah Geronimo) has the dream of working closely with Miggy (John Lloyd Cruz) who is the man of her dreams and who is the youngest in the Montenegro family. Her dream came true when she got a job as an editorial assistant in his magazine. While the rest of the employees are fed up with his antics and attitude, Laida is still head over heels in love with him and is blinded with admiration.

Athena (Kathreen Bernardo) received a message from an anonymous sender, but still agreed to meet up out of curiosity. She then learns that Kenji (Daniel Padilla), who is a school delinquent, was the one who sent her the message and it is meant for another woman who has the same name as her. Kenji then blackmails her and made her pretend to be his girlfriend, but the two become friends and the pretend relationship started to turn into something serious.
